2018 Annual Report & Community Impact Update

Letter from the President

March 2019

Greetings Concordia Friends & Supporters,

It is a pleasure to share our annual report for 2018. We are so thankful to all of you who support the students and the vision of Concordia University-Portland. Each gift helps us to live out our mission as a Christian university preparing leaders for the transformation of society, and many of the gifts directly support the 97% of our students who seek tuition assistance to attend Concordia.

This year’s campus theme is “All In,” taken from Matthew 22:37-39 and we strive to be All In as we live out our mission.

Thank you for being All In with us as we evolve new models for developing the next generation of servant leaders.

Here are just a few highlights of God’s blessings over the past year:

  • The University’s board launched a search for our next president, and appointed me as Interim President. The search is anticipated to be completed by summer 2019.
  • Our student enrollment is on an upward trajectory with more than 6,000 students worldwide on campus and online. We continue our focus on developing highly competent and caring professionals in education, health care, business, and law. These programs continue to achieve high acclaim and accreditations.
  • Our 3toPhD® community is in its second year at home in our new $48M facility combining Concordia University-Portland’s College of Education and Faubion School PreK-8. The initiative is receiving national attention as a public-private partnership. Learn more at 3toPhD.org.
  • Concordia Athletics is achieving significant results in the NCAA Division II (GNAC Conference), after a successful three-year bid to move from NAIA to NCAA DII. Join us for an event!
  • Lilly Endowment Inc. is offering a five-year grant to sustain and grow our program for youth at the intersection of faith formation and social justice. Visit EnvisionPDX.com for more information.
  • More recently, we announced embedding our arts and sciences within the university’s other colleges, and creation of The Luther Center to more intentionally build upon our 113-year commitment to students, community, and congregations throughout the Pacific Northwest.

We are grateful for God’s many blessings and for the overwhelming support of our University friends, alumni, donors, church partners, and community. Thank you for your partnership in education, ministry, and for being a valued part of our Concordia family.

In His Service,

2018 Council of Trustees

Concordia University is blessed by the leadership of the Board of Regents and the Foundation Board of Directors. The university is governed by the Board of Regents, elected by the conventions of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, the Northwest District, and the current board. The Regents meet throughout the year to strategize, plan, and set forth policies that are in turn carried out by the President, who is an advisory member to the Board.

The Board of Directors of the Concordia University Foundation is comprised of dedicated individuals with an affinity and passion to serve the mission of the university. The Foundation Directors oversee the overall business affairs of the Foundation and meet at various times throughout the year to inform, discuss, and strategize the goals and activities of the Foundation.

Together, the university’s Regents and Foundation Directors are referred to as the Council of Trustees. We thank them for their service and their leadership to the Concordia community and students.

We Believe Today is an Opportunity to Change Tomorrow

Concordia University-Portland is continually evolving to adopt appropriate technology, employ new educational best practices, and develop mutually productive community partnerships to better serve our mission. Here are some of this year’s highlights.

School of Management receives largest philanthropic gift in university history

$5 million grant launches innovative new initiatives

A grant from the Robert D. and Marcia H. Randall Charitable Trust establishes the Robert D. Randall Endowed Chair for Business and Technology. Driven by the unique makeup of the Northwest economy, new curriculum will be co-designed with a cross-section of regional business leaders to offer students practical experience in a variety of settings as part of their academic journey.

Concordia Law Fully Approved by the ABA

Full accreditation for Boise’s first three-year law school

Concordia University School of Law has gone from vision to reality, achieving full approval from the American Bar Association (ABA).
“Full ABA accreditation strengthens and affirms the university’s commitment to prepare caring legal professionals who display humility, courage, and faith,” said Concordia University–Portland Interim President Johnnie Driessner.

Strengthening and adapting the academic portfolio

Doubling down on education, health care, & business

Concordia University-Portland will strengthen and expand its education, health care, business, and law programs, embedding arts and sciences curriculum within those colleges. The new structure aligns resources with the programs most incoming students are requesting, and will ensure that Concordia will achieve its Vision 2024 mission.

Student Snapshot

Concordia University-Portland welcomes students of all backgrounds, all nationalities, and all faiths, promoting an inclusive environment. We also believe the diverse student population adds to the richness of campus life and each student’s experience.

Working Together Toward Change

Concordia University-Portland is continually evolving to incorporate new technology, expand our educational offerings, and develop strategic partnerships to better serve our mission. It’s a nice bonus when we’re nationally recognized for our accomplishments.

3toPhD® Achieves National Recognition at SXSW

3toPhD® took the national stage this March with a panel presentation at SXSW Edu in Austin, Texas. Our “Reimagining School as the Heartbeat of Community” presentation was selected from a field of more than 1,500 entries, and our panel spoke to an engaged audience of educators and education professionals. The 3toPhD partnership strives to create healthier, more educated communities by reducing health  and education disparities for historically underserved and vulnerable populations.

We are a community of courageous individuals, compelled to make a difference.

AV Phal, MBA ’18 – Security & Risk Manager at an international biotech firm.

Pre-Med Freshman Heidi Lee sets her sights on global health challenges.

Frederic Washington, EdD ’18: “Education is truly the great equalizer.”

Meghan Luebbert, BSN ’17, on the equal import of being an all-star student, athlete, and teammate.

We believe that what we do together at Concordia has the power to change the world.

Thank you for your support of Concordia University. Together we are preparing students to serve the Portland community and other communities throughout the Pacfic Northwest and world. We hope you’ll continue to be our partner in this endeavor.
